This summer our church had a challenge for the kids. Read every chapter of Psalm and Proverbs between Memorial Day and Labor Day. For every 20 chapters completed, the kids get prizes.
Jason and I thought this reading club was a fabulous idea, but could 10 month olds handle it? Could they listen to 1-3 chapters a day? When would we find the time in our busy day to read the Bible? Would they even understand? Would it make a difference?
Well, we are just stubborn enough to give it a try. Following the advice of Lacie, we picked a meal to read right after and make it our daily routine. We chose breakfast - that way the boys are still strapped into their high chairs and it is a great way to start our day! :) So we eat breakfast, read the assigned chapters and then say a prayer.
The first few days there was a lot of screaming and squirming from our two angels, but now they basically listen. We're not sure how much they are understanding of the content, but they know that this is what we do as a family. We tell them every day that this is the Bible and it is God's Word. It also gave Jason and I the jump start to begin family devos that we have always talked about doing with our kids.
So was it worth it? Absolutely!!!! Have we learned from God's Word? Definitely!!! Will we do it again next year? No doubt! Have 10-12 month old children grown to appreciate the Bible? We are confident!

glad to see you blogging! We have joined you in the reading, but we're going at turtle pace so we haven't come to get a prize. My prize is just getting to focus and spend the time with K reading. Thanks for the motivation! Love ya!
That's awesome! We should start that with our kids. They love to hear bible stories already. We try to read stories and sing songs during bathtime. That seems to hold their interest and keep them seated atleast for a little while!

I love it, as you well know! I started reading to my kids as infants (not that much at that young an age of course) but we have certainly found it to be beneficial through the years. I think it is so important to teach them and what better time to learn than as babies. They will indeed grow up "from infancy [knowing] the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus." (2 Tim 3:15)
as for all that screaming and squalling:
Psalm 8:2 "From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger."
Thanks to our Lord for such an idea, and for those of you (us) who are undertaking to read to and with our kids, and encouraging them to read alone as well.
and btw Robyn, before we finish, if you have done any of the reading w/ your daughter, let me know (I take this as letting me know) so that we can get her award at the end, even if she didn't get done...it is such a blessing to read ANY bit of God's word to our kids, no matter if they get a toy or not...the prize will come....
